My
Story

Photos by Kirsten Lewis

Several years ago while living in Shanghai, China I took a leap of faith and pivoted from my MBA educated third-world economic consulting background and committed to building a career around my passion for using documentary photography as a tool for storytelling.

A writer friend recently asked me “What fuels your creativity?” Without hesitation I clearly explained that I find pure joy in showing families how beautiful their “ordinary” lives are.

I realize this style of documentary photography can be considered a luxury product not needed due to the fact everyone now has a camera attached to their hand at all times (yes – I too carry around my iPhone like it’s a long lost child I’ll never let go of again!). However, I am committed to making every family so comfortable in front of my lens that the photographs will appear, in the words of a client, to have been “God’s view”. Trust me. I’m the first to admit that not even I, with my pro camera, cannot make photographs that capture the simple essence of my family’s story. And for goodness sake! I want to be in the photos too!!!

After we last hired and viewed the printed documentary photographs from my mentor, Kirsten Lewis, my husband said, with tears in his eyes, “I will never forget how quirky, curious, & caring our kids are – in this moment. Our courage, love and team spirit allows for this. I can’t wait until Kirsten comes back!” That’s The Cupps Family essence. What’s yours?
