Home 2020 Project

Photographs are of the highest value when used to remember and reflect on a moment in time. Some of the most notable & iconic photographs have been created at times of extreme crisis.  As the world ground to a halt during the initial peak of COVID-19 I spent a great deal time self-reflecting on what it is I’ll remember when I look back at the events of now.

Still, even as a professional family photographer, I struggled to document this unprecedented time we are all enduring collectively as a community. I struggled to see the “goodness” in the mania of having my young children at home 24/7 – indefinitely (Thank gawd for the memes that kept me laughing through the tears!). In my rare moments of clarity, I did find gratitude for the home that protects my most precious from the invisible enemy ravaging our world.

If like me, despite the inevitable sweatpants and unwashed hair, you will have wanted to remember this historical ‘moment in time’ – your children’s faces at the exact ages they were when the virus attacked, the home that protected them, and the sense of achievement for never giving-up.

Throughout Spring 2020, here in Seoul, I offered my professional family photography services at no cost to capture family portraits OUTSIDE family homes.  In lieu of payment for my services I asked families to make a private donation to Habitat for Humanity Korea whose vision is to have “a world where everyone has a decent place to live.” For most of us it may be an inconvenience to be confined to our homes in self-isolation, but for those whom don’t have the safe harbor of a home the situation can be much more dire.

To protect myself and the families I used a longer than usual lens to keep a distance of at least one meter or more between us. I also wore a mask and did not accept any invitations to enter participants’ homes.

Portrait sessions lasted for 10-20 minutes. Every family received at least five professional quality portrait.

It was an honor to be trusted to document a piece of each of these families’ stories & make a difference together.

With Love,

Lisa
